A weekend of luck, both good and bad! by Ryan Dixon
It was a return to what is seen as one of the best supermoto venues in the country for rounds 9 and 10 of the Proppa.com British Supermoto Championship 2009. Three sisters, Wigan was to host the event and the action lived up to expectations with some fantastic racing throughout all the classes!
As has come to be expected at the British Championship rounds this year, the weather was very changeable and rain Friday night and Saturday morning had everybody changing wheels in expectation of a wet days racing. However, the rain was very intermittent and with the surface at Three Sisters known for drying quickly, it was anyones guess which would be the right tyre choice!
The Proppa.com! British Elite Championship saw a damp start to qualifying but with the rain quickly clearing the track soon dried, resulting in many of the front runners changing from full wets to a combination of wet front and slick rear tyres mid-way through the session. At the end of qualifying, the results saw Team Motoracing KTM’s Christian Iddon at the top with over a seconds advantage from a chasing pack consisting of Motosupplies Husqvarna’s Matt Winstanley, MWR/Craig’s KTM mounted James Addy and Team Smith KTM’s Ady Smith. The start of race one had everyone guessing which tyres to choose with some riders on full wets and some on a front wet, slick rear combination. The race pace and results showed that the combination was the correct choice with Ady Smith mastering the slippy conditions and taking the first win of the day ahead of hard charging Matt Winstanley and Keith Farmer. Christian Iddon’s choice of full wets saw him slip to 8th position at the end of the race! Race 2 was a little different with full slicks and a dry track resulting in Christian taking the race win and fastest lap, closely ahead of James Addy and Matt Winstanley with Keith Farmer coming home 4th and a strong 5th for Lee Jones on his Robinsons KTM in only his second meeting back after injury! Race 3 and again luck was not on Christian’s side as he finished 5th due to a puncture slowing his progress whilst he was leading the race! This left the way clear for Matt Winstanley to take his first win of the day, closely followed by Ady Smith and Chris Hodgson rounding out the top 3 on his Motosupplies/Silicone Engineering Husqvarna. On the day, consistency proved the key and it was Matt Winstanley who took the overall from Keith Farmer 2nd and Christian Iddon in 3rd.
The Nameplate Services Lites class was led by Ollie Harrison on the Skyzone KTM, again by over a second from Lee Rudd on the TRM/LR designs Honda. Joe Collier was 3rd overall in the lites class and the leading Junior rider aboard his Honda CRF150. Race one resulted in a fairly comfortable victory for Skyzone KTM’s Ollie Harrison over Lee Rudd in 2nd with James Moore claiming an impressive 3rd on his WM Racing KTM. Joe Collier managed 4th overall but claimed the top spot in the Junior class ahead of Malachi Mitchell-Thomas and Ben Stafford. Race two was a much closer affair with a very narrow victory for Ollie Harrison over Lee Rudd, separated by half a second, with an 18 second gap to 3rd placed, Scotsman Dougie Cunningham. Joe Collier again claimed 4th overall and the Junior class win by half a second from Malachi Mitchell-Thomas. Ben Stafford was another luckless rider, suffering from a puncture part way through the race and slipping from the front of the junior class to 3rd. The final race of the day saw another fantastic battle between Lee Rudd and Ollie Harrison with Rudd claiming the lead early on and holding Ollie off for the rest of the race to take the win. It was again Dougie Cunningham in 3rd but this time it was Justin Bateman who took 4th just ahead of Joe Collier, who was again the leading Junior rider. The overall went to Ollie Harrison by just 2 points from Lee Rudd with Dougie Cunningham just edging out Joe Collier by one point for 3rd. Young Mr Collier did however claim the Junior class win from Malachi Mitchell-Thomas and Ben Stafford.
A new name was at the top of the SM Cup timesheets in the form of Lewis Cornish on his Supermoto International backed KTM 450 SMR ahead of Chris Harrison, Craig Richardson, Bruce Dingle and Dean Wingate, all separated by less than a second! It was a close fought encounter between Lewis Cornish and Bruce Dingle in the first heat with Cornish just edging Dingle out for the win. Craig Richardson claimed a lonely 3rd ahead of Chris Harrison and Brad Davey, 4th and 5th. Race 2 was a little easier for Cornish and he took the win by 7 seconds from Craig Richardson and Dingle rounding out the top 3. Race 3 again saw the same 3 at the top but in a different order this time, with Dingle taking his first win of the day ahead of Richardson in 2nd and a recovering Cornish 3rd after a crash saw him having to earn his position from mid-pack at the start of the race! This mixture of results throughout the day left a very close overall but it was Cornish who took it by 2 points from Bruce Dingle 2nd who was also 2 points ahead of Craig Richardson in 3rd. Chris Harrison’s consistent results earned him 4th overall for the day.
The Drayton Croft Motorcycles Aprilia SXV Cup saw another master-class performance by Bruce Dingle who took pole position and all three wins. It was the battle for 2nd that saw the closest racing of the day between Phil Gee, who qualified 2nd, Chris Harrison and Lee Abbott who only managed 5th in qualifying but two 3rds and a 2nd which was enough to give him 2nd overall! He just edged out Phil Gee who took 3rd and it was Chris Harrison who took 4th overall despite claiming a 2nd place finish in race two.
The quad class was dominated by Colin Jackson on his Kirkmuirhill Inn Yamaha with pole position, three straight wins and three fastest laps. Sam Hodgson claimed 2nd overall with two 2nds and a 3rd ahead of Andrew Laister and Chris Wright.
Sunday was overcast to begin with but the rain held off and it stayed dry with the sun burning through around mid-day, resulting in a dry day’s racing for all classes much to everybody’s delight! There was also a slightly different track layout for round 10 to give a bit of variation and it certainly suited some riders more than others!
The Elite class was this time dominated by Christian Iddon who seemed to have got rid of his gremlins and took pole position and a hat-trick of wins and the overall. It was Matt Winstanley who followed him home by just over a second in race one from Keith Farmer 3rd. Race two saw Farmer chase Iddon all the way, finishing 2nd by just over a second and Winstanley 3rd. Again, in race 3 it was a luckless Keith Farmer who took the challenge to Christian Iddon, setting the fastest lap and leading the race until the penultimate lap when the front end tucked on his SMRacing Aprilia as he pushed for the win allowing Iddon to take it with a fast recovering Farmer 2nd from Matt Winstanley 3rd and Ady Smith in 4th. With Iddon taking the overall it was all Farmer could manage to claim 2nd ahead of Winstanley who had a comfortable gap over 4th placed South African Craig Venske.
The Nameplate Lites class saw more fantastic, fast paced action between youngster Ollie Harrison and rival Lee Rudd. Harrison claimed pole position and the first race win albeit by a very small margin but Lee Rudd kept his cool and took the final two race wins of the day which also gave him the overall from Harrison by just 2 points. It was a very impressive days riding by Joe Collier and despite only being on a Honda CRF150 against the bigger 250’s, he still claimed 3rd overall in the Lites class and the win in the Junior class to boot. Malachi Mitchell-Thomas also had a very impressive day aboard his WM Racing CRF150 claiming 4th overall and 2nd in the Junior class, just showing that the 150’s can cut it in with the 250’s!
The SM Cup class saw a new name at the top of the time sheets with a impressive yet surprising performance by Graeme Norris on his Husqvarna 450. Lewis Cornish claimed 2nd on the grid ahead of Bruce Dingle and Chris Harrison. It was Bruce Dingle who made the most of his front row start to take the win in race one ahead of Norris and Harrison who was just ahead of Craig Richardson. Race two was again taken control of by Mr Dingle but this time only 0.8 of a second ahead of Lewis Cornish. Graeme Norris was having a consistent day claiming 3rd and Dean Wingate took an impressive 4th position. In the final cup race of the weekend, Lewis Cornish left his mark taking the win, ahead of Bruce Dingle, Graeme Norris and Chris Harrison. Dingle’s consistent, fast riding gave him the overall win ahead of an impressive Graeme Norris with Chris Harrison edging Lewis Cornish out by 2 points for 3rd place.
The Drayton Croft Motorcycles SXV Cup was again dominated by Bruce Dingle, taking pole position and three wins. Second was taken by a consistent and fast Chris Harrison and Lee Abbott claimed 3rd overall on the day.
The quad class was almost a complete re-run of Saturday with Colin Jackson taking all three wins and fastest laps resulting in the overall. Sam Hodsgon managed three 2nd places this time which gave him 2nd overall ahead of Chris Wright in 3rd and Andrew Laister in 4th.
At the end of the day riders could reflect on a fantastic weekends racing that ran like clockwork whether you had good luck or bad. The organisers made two different tracks that hadn’t been run at 3 Sisters before and they created a different feel on both days. The Weekends special awards were presented to; Michelin Riders of the day, Ady Smith, Robert Hartley, Graeme Norris & Keith Farmer. The Muk Junkie best presented bike award went to Simon Bentleys immaculate Honda. The Acerbis special awards went to Chris Walker & Lee Williams
One of the most action packed race weekends for some time. A full report will be published later.
Many thanks to all the riders and their crews for supplying the amazing action.
If you like a bit of a change from the norm then Aprilia have the answer. We have copied Keith Needhams release. Keith currently manages the sole Aprilia UK Supermoto rider who happens to be called Keith, and so does his dad.
Aprilia UK factory supported rider Keith Farmer will debut the all new Aprilia MXV450 this weekend at the Three Sisters round of the British Supermoto Championship.
The bike kindly supplied by NTB of York has been converted by SMRacing to full championship specification with the help of Alice Racing over the last few days. SMRacing, Alice Racing, NTB and of course Aprilia UK have worked together this year to provide Farmer with everything he needed for an assault on the British championship title. However a string of punctures and bad luck have left Farmer in eighth place despite a strong second place at Sport City. With only race glory to hope for now the team have been working behind the scenes to get the MXV into Supermoto trim with little alterations and hopefully prove that this awesome MX bike can be the next generation of motard weaponry without too much expense.
Thanks must go to NTB for the loan of yet another bike!! TALON for building a rear wheel in one day!! and everyone else that has helped the team out so far this year.
If your going to the Three Sisters feel free to wonder over and view what could quite possibly relight the fire of supermoto and prove you dont need £15,000 in a race bike!!

This coming weekend, 1st and 2nd of August, sees the championship return to the legendary supermoto track nr Wigan. 3 Sisters has a long history with British Championship Supermoto and this weekend you will see the best of British Supermoto racers doing what they do best.
Multiple British Championship winners Christian Iddon and Matt Winstanley will go head to head for the first time on almost equal footings. Previously they have been in different classes with different tyres, often special tyres made for them. This time we have Mitchelin Tyres, a major sponsor of the championship, to thank for leveling things as they provide control tyres. Also this year we have been runing just one premier class, The Elite.
Those two will not have it all their own way at the front. On form Ady Smith has a vast amount of experience and should use his 3 Sisters track knowledge to good effect. Craig Venske constantly improving, Keith Farmer back on form, David Hartley running well, James Addy a 3 sisters expert. Just a few of the riders with more than a slight chance of putting a supermoto trophy on the mantle piece by the end of this weekend.
With 4 more rounds to go the championship is far from over.
Not forgetting the other classes to excite any bike sport palette.
Make 3 Sisters the track to be at this weekend.
What a weekend
Praise must go to the whole BSMC team who battled against time and the elements to put an event on that would match any sporting event for drama and excitement. The racing was first class all the way through the classes, battles at every level, well done to all riders and volunteers.
Mixed fortunes on Saturday with Craig having a big off qualifying and George battling hard for grid position, Ady consistent as ever put his KTM 450 SMR on the front row with 3rd The grid was world class, Team Smith KTM Racing riders on the KTM 450 SMR battled all day with some of the best Supermoto riders, Craig and George showed their metal battling through for good finishes. Ady pushed hard all day collecting a third, fourth and a fifth giving him 4th overall just a couple of points off the podium.
Overall
Ady Smith 4th
Craig Venske 6th
George Clements 7th
Sunday turned into a whole different event as the Manchester mico climate turned the tarmac into a river and the offroad section into a bog. After qualifying most riders seemed in favour of using the offroad section as most felt it difficult, rideable and safe. The qualifying turned upside down with the weather allowed the specialist wet weather riders to shine but, as a number off the front runners found the dirt not to their liking the decision was taken by BSMC for safety reasons that the dirt would be taken out for the first two races. Epic battles ensued in every race with Ady crossing the line in race one just half a bike length behind to take second with both riders racing to the max all race long and bringing the whole stadium to its feet as they crossed the line. The second saw the first 4 within 10 metres of each other all race, Ady taking 4th , Craig 7th and George 11th after a difficult qualifying. Race three went Team Smith KTM Racings way again with the offroad having been re-graded, reinstated (after all it is Supermoto). All riders where tested on loose wet dirt that turned the whole track into an ice rink. Fortune favours the brave and Ady sat in third for most of the race only putting pressure on second towards the end forcing a mistake allowing Ady to take second place and second overall.
Ady Smith; “ I am really pleased with my second overall. The riders that finished in front of me today or paid fulltime Supermoto riders racing in the World Series, it’s good to know I can live with that pace.”
Overall
Ady Smith 2nd
Craig Venske 6th
George Clements 10th
Supermoto quads return to the highest level of Supermoto in Britain. Sportcity and the Proppa.com British Supermoto Championship are pleased to see these 4 wheel stars come out to slide.
With lap times on a par with the best of the Elite class don’t expect to see anything other than fast, furious and on the edge racing as they slide all four wheels around every corner.
Welcome back.
